GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE June 29, 2001

Queer music takes on an international flavor

by Anthony Glassman

The world of queer music just keeps getting larger. With the Latin music explosion of the past couple of years, it was only a matter of time before an out Latin sensation caused a splash, while more established homocore bands put out new albums; show tunes got even more gay; and even country music got a little fey around the fringes.

3

The Butchies

The Butchies, that lovable lesbian punk rock band, returned with a third album in 2001, aptly titled 3. A little more introspective than some of their previous work, it still rocks out like only angry young dykes can, with crunching guitars, banging drums and melodic voices tinged with despair and anger.

Of course, they also have fun, with songs like "I Hate.com." Then they get more serious, as in "Junior High Lament," about a young lesbian getting beaten up for looking like a boy, or "Mandy (1985-2000)," whose title alone makes me a little weepy.

It's been said before, but it bears repeating, that just about anything on Mr. Lady Records is worth your money. This one is worth double your money. Buy two copies, give one to a friend.

The Butchies have been touring with Amy Ray; perhaps, after 3, they'll have a big name like Amy Ray opening for them, instead of the other way around.

Calling All Kings and Queens Various artists

Mr. Lady Records hits you again with this compilation, covering the homocore spectrum. Boys and girls, new and old artists, everything from the spoken word of Gretchen Phillips' "Eau de Lesbianism" to the dark emo of California Lightning's "Lugosi."

The BUTCПies

Big names in chick rock like Le Tigre, the Butchies, Amy Ray and Sleater-Kinney turn in tracks for this tour

Calling King de force compilation,

while groups such as PME bring in famous alternaqueers like Ms. Vaginal Davis, and Tracy + the Plastics put out some spooky electronica.

Other bands just have a retro vibe, like the Crowns' "Shallow End," sounding like the Cure's early days; or Navy's "Safe Harbors," reminiscent of early-'80s post-punk.

Truly a worthwhile compilation, this is a collection worthy of shelf space in the CD rack of any queer-rock lover. Why don't these bands have radio play? Because people still give their money to prepackaged pop pap like the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and Britney Spears.

Angel

Jade Esteban Estrada

Estrada has a daunting task, straddling two worlds. A list of his headlining appearances at festivals spans the north half of the

ANGEL

Western Hemisphere. Playing at Pride events in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, the child is all over the place. He also appears at Latino festivals in as many places, bringing a gay face to the mui ma-

cho world of Latin music.

And such a face. Such a schoene punim, as my grandmother would say in Yiddish. If anybody is frustrated that Ricky Martin won't come out (or with the radical notion that he really isn't gay), then Jade Esteban Estrada is the man for you, every bit as sexy, as polished a singer, and as openly gay as the day is long.

Estrada's music has more of a tejano feel than Martin's Puerto Rican-influenced songs; it's kind of like having your very own gay Ruben Blades.

He's also got his own web site-thankfully with lots of photos-at http:// www.getjaded.com.

LOVE

My Favorite Broadway The Love Songs

Various artists

For all you lovers of show tunes, don't feel left out. My Fa-

vorite Broadway: The Love Songs, hosted by the lovely Julie Andrews, has more songs than you can shake a conductor's baton at. Everybody is on this CD, from Nathan Lane and Linda Eder to Chita Rivera and Tom Wopat. (Wasn't Wopat on The Dukes of Hazzard?) Michael Crawford puts in an appearance, as do Peter Gallagher, Robert Goulet and Barry Manilow.

Andrews, despite complications from throat surgery, also sings a bit of "The Rain in Spain" from My Fair Lady.

The best part of the CD, however, is what it represents. A portion of the proceeds from the record sales is being donated to Broadway Cares, the foundation set up to channel money from theater endeavors to AIDS organizations.

The Fine Print Mark Islam

When a country-western CD comes into the office of a gay newspaper, generally some promotions director has just sent copies to every paper for which she has an address in her computer. It is the job of the gay paper's staff reporter to call or mail the

public relations people, gently explaining that, unless their artist is openly gay, the paper can't really do much to cover the album.

Of course, when the PR person for the country-western artist e-mails back and says, "Anthony: Yes, Mark Islam is openly gay," all bets are off.

There are no wives running off with pickup trucks, no dogs, no shotgun racks, just songs about getting what you want, who you want, in a society that doesn't want to let you.

It is, as might be expected, a very introspective, thoughtful album. If you like the twang of 12-string guitar, the lilting voices of country singers, pick it up. The odds are, you won't be disappointed."

The Legendary Compilation

Various artists

The dance music played at the legendary drag festival has been boiled down onto a CD mixed by DJ Steve Travolta.

It's kind of hard to talk about a CD like this: you either like the dance music Travolta spins or you don't. He is a skilled mixer; then again, almost anyone is in a studio. It's about the music, baby, and that is here in droves. The only artists I'd heard of before getting

this CD are Kim En-

glish, CeCe Peniston and Crystal Waters, whose "100% Pure Love" is mixed on here. However, the Ones doing "Flawless" is the track to hear, with the Byron Stingily mixes of "Get Up" and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" close seconds.

As much as I hate admitting it, I think I'm falling in love with Nervous Records, who put this album out. Any dance music label hip enough to play with Lady Bunny is tops in my book.
